Welcome to DAY 7 of 31 Days of Mindfulness and Meatless October Challenge as well as a Week 1 wrap up…
“Can’t is not a word in my vocabulary, it’s meaningless” ~ Candice Maria
I CAN….this should be your posture today. Why? Because you took the time to take on this challenge, to start a fitness journey, to add mindfulness to your current fitness journey, to explore the benefits of a meatless or plant-based diet, to add flexibility training to your current fitness routine, to try yoga for the first time or add more consistency to your current yoga practice, or some combination of these things. No matter what you’ve done over this past week from this list, overall whichever path or stance you took in approaching this month’s challenge, that’s an accomplishment in and of itself in so many ways.
We’ve all had that one person or group of people in our lives who may have told us that we “can’t” do this or that and no matter how bad you wanted to do whatever it was, in the back of your mind you always heard “you can’t” or “you’re not good enough”. Well let me tell you, no matter how deep that scar can be in our mind, it can be healed and you can overcome it. I personally as a 30 something adult channeled that negative energy from my high school and college years into a positive process of progress and proof that what I was told I “couldn’t do” or was not “made for” back then, I not only accomplished that and then some, but also did it all at an age when most people wouldn’t even dream of pursuing such fitness feats. I did all of this through erasing the phrase “can’t” from my mental dictionary and replaced it with “I CAN”
So on this journey of meatless nutrition, mindful mobility, and self care reassure within yourself that anything is possible, at any age, at any fitness level, as long as YOU believe that YOU CAN and YOU WILL get it done and then some!
Ok challengers…today is the last day of the challenge where you are expected to do a minimum of 30 minutes of cardio and at least 1 Round (or as many as your body needs) of the Sun Salutation A sequence as prehab before and/or after or even during your other resistance training or athletic activities today.
Next week you will do a minimum of 2 Sun Salutation A sequences….with your minimum of 30 minutes of cardio, etc…yes I know it sounds trivial to the advanced yogi…but to my gym peeps…my barbell beasts and swole sisters out there…. to make time to do a little yoga or flexibility training after beasting it out in the gym on the weights is harder than some think, and it’s typically an afterthought pre-workout as well (insert side eye #preachingtothechoir & points at self…lol! #guilty!) but I can assure you we need that “stop…drop….and bend” time just as much if not more than the die hard yogi (no offense to my yoga friends), but for my weightlifters and runners…
I get it…I have my moments of flexibility progression and regression as the video in this blog post will show.
I personally have been struggling with my own flexibility this year, as I have fallen off the practice wheel as a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) (insert side eye #spanksownhand) due to life work schedule busyness, other fitness endeavors, etc. and my muscles have tightened back up a lot since my yoga teacher journey officially began in early 2014.
So I need this challenge as much as any of my fellow barbell junkies out there, because yes, while I may be a yogi and RYT I am still also very much a bodybuilder and weight lifter (insert smirk face #bestofbothworlds…lol!) as well as former endurance and current speed athlete with my own share of past athletic injuries and imbalances that I have to work with and around in my own yoga practice (#noflawless yoga in this blog #perfectlyimperfect). So do know I am prehabbing with ya’ll as I post these blogs each day!
So in the above video I have performed 3 rounds of the Sun Salutation A sequence with modifications for intermediate and beginner fitness levels, as I myself have not yet mastered the advanced floating handstand transition that comes along with this sequence after the forward fold into plank and back to forward fold from downward facing dog. (DISCLAIMER: I specialize primarily in yoga for beginners and “special populations”).
Meatless Meal of the Day (MOD)
Today’s featured Meatless MOD is actually not a “Meal” but a vegan friendly high protein “snack” that I stumbled upon recently in Super Target. It’s a plant protein bar by 22 Days Nutrition
The Nutrition Facts (The Macros) and beautiful story about the founding of the company behind the bar:
This concludes Day 7 of the 31 Days of Mindfulness and Meatless October Challenge….see you on Day 8/Week 2!
